REMEMBER THIS IS JUST A GUIDE TO HELP YOU GET STARTED NOT A FULL ON HOW TO.
part 1 THE BAG
(Just to be clear when we use the term BAG here we are referring to Backpacks) Let’s start with the bag itself:
Don’t just by one that looks nice or just because it says it’s a survival or bug out bag. The size of your bag will be determined by what and how much you plan on carrying. Some basic recommendations are:
1. Padded shoulder straps will help with comfort when the bag is loaded.
2. A Hip / Waist belt is a highly recommended as it will help carry the weight of the bag taking some off your shoulders, and wider and or padded belt will give more comfort.
3. Rain proof or at least a built in rain cover to help protect your gear.e weight of the bag taking some off your shoulders, and wider and or padded belt will give more comfort.
4. Then it’s important to Try it on see how it feels put some weight in it walk around with it to make sure it fits you, take it on an off is it easy to readjust for a comfortable fit. Visit a few quality outdoor stores, try some on. a quality store will have weights that you can use to test the backpack. and personnel to help you get the right fit.
5. If you’re a couple just because a bag works for you does not mean it will work for your Spouse.
A few items that are not quite as critical:
1. Color / look Remember you’re trying to blend in so bright colors (red, orange, yellow) are probable not the best choices. Also looking to tactical i.e. lots of molly webbing military/survival patches etc. is not highly recommended.
2. Does it have enough compartments so you can sort some of your gear for fast access? Also too many pockets can make finding things difficult.
Note: In general, in an Urban environment with a commute distances of 25 miles or less (Which is the range list will deal with) your GHB would have a loaded weight of no more than 25 lbs. less would be better.A walk of this length will take approximately 16 hours. Depending on, your fitness level an health, the weather and terrain. The average person will walk at around 1.5 to 2.5 Mph.
