Get Home Bags (GHB)

Bug out Bag vs Get home Bag

Bug out bags are the bags you take when leaving your home during a emergency / natural disaster. These generally hold supplies which would be sufficient for 1 week plus of survival time. so they also weigh more. Typically, this bag holds around 40+ pounds stuff inside.

Get home bags are the bags you take with you on a daily basis, (If you don’t have it, you can’t use it.) typically in you vehicle, to help you get home in an emergency / natural disaster.  As it is made only to help you survive for a few hours, it contains much less stuff, is lightweight by almost half, and is easier to carry. Even though you should be able to get home in a few hours, it’s a good idea to plan on being out overnight and pack accordingly.

Note:
In general, in an urban environment with a commute distances of 25 miles or less (Which is the range this list will deal with) your GHB would have a loaded weight of no more than 25 lbs. less would be better. A walk of this length will take approximately 7 -18 hours. Depending on, your fitness level an health, the weather and terrain. The average person will walk at around 1.5 to 3Mph.

3. This may work running around campus
but try carrying 20lbs of gear for 10 to 20 miles?

And this kind of load only works
if you’re in peak physical condition.

Have you tried carrying it for any distance with all your gear in it?

4. You need to take in to consideration your personnel health.
